Description
Handmade Celtic seal tile in Porcelain clay with a turquoise glaze.
The Selkie is a mythological creature found in Irish, Scottish and Icelandic folklore, they were believed to live as seals and said to shed their seal skins to become human on land.
He finds her naked on the sea shore and compels her to become his wife. But the wife will spend her time in captivity but eventually falls in love with the fisherman. However, she never stops longing for the sea, her true home, and will often be seen gazing longingly at the ocean. She bears several children by her human husband, but once she discovers her skin, she immediately returns to the sea and abandons the children she loved. Although in some children version of the tale, the selkie revisits her family on land once a year, in the typical folktale she is never seen again by them.
A beautiful but sad tale.
